The Raider women’s tennis team fell to Detroit on Sat. with a final score of 1-4, before they defeated Detroit on Sun. 5-2. On Sun. night Wright State lost to Ohio State finishing 0-7.
With the Horizon League Tournament approaching, head coach Sean McCaffrey stressed that the match against Oakland was very important for the team.
“There are four teams fighting for one last spot [in the HL tournament] and both of our teams are involved [Wright State and Oakland], really whoever wins today is looking at pretty much being in the tournament...” McCaffrey said.
The Raiders went on to defeat Oakland putting them in a good position for the HL tournament and also ranking them sixth in the conference.
When asked about the chance to play in the HL tournament, freshman Megan Brdicka said, “For sure, yeah, I’m so excited.”
Brdicka discussed how her and teammate Aby Madrigal defeated Oakland in doubles winning 8-0, and the strategy they used.
“Fight hard and move my feet,” said Brdicka “Staying solid on fundamentals, because if I start to overthink I will start missing.”

The men’s tennis team defeated Detroit on Sat. with a 5-1 win leaving them third in conference standings.
When asked about the men’s win against Detroit, McCaffrey talked about how important winning conference matches were.
“Anytime you play a conference team and you have a number of straight set wins in order to solidify a victory relatively quickly, it bodes well for shaking off the nerves because there is nobody in this conference that is a pushover, so in every match that we play they are very close” McCaffrey said.
McCaffrey goes on to discuss his thoughts about both women’s and men’s tennis teams.
“There is a definite level of energy, the camaraderie that both teams have really lends itself to kids then wanting to run a little faster and dive for balls they normally wouldn’t get, when they have their team backing them up…Even though it’s an
individual sport you have people wanting to run through a wall for each other” McCaffrey said.
The men’s tennis team hosts an upcoming match against Duquesne on Fri. and travel to Louisville on Sun. for a 10 a.m. match.
The women’s team will host Milwaukee on Fri. and Green Bay on Sat. at the South Regency Tennis Center.
